The most flexible martial artist I ever knew always stretched using this routine:
1- Warm up, usually a walk
2- self massage, to relax the muscle-he considered this the most important part, as tension should be completely absent before stretching.
3- Light stretches for an extended duration.
4- Deep stretches for extended durations
I've never seen anyone get better results. He was 45 at the time, could do both chinese splits and regular splits, as well as all the other pretzel work that is common.
It is notable that he considered it foolish to stretch without massage.
