Malo lava Leiataua....le tama tele mai Manono. I enjoyed reading your posting. I had the 1st hand experience to make contact with one of my Hawaiian counter parts that used to work for the old Hawaiian Tel back in the 1980's. My Hawaiian friend came to American Samoa for a project with the local telephone company but he also had a deep desire to contact his Samoan family on the island of Aunu'u. The family's name is Fuiava of Aunu'u. Later he said that King David Kalakaua came to Samoa in the late 1800's with his crew trying to rebuild the polynesian nation again but Samoa was in turmoil with the western countries of Britain, Germany and the US. The king went back to Hawaii but several of his men remainded behind and married Samoan women. It was quite an emotional experience for these distance family members to once again rekindle their blood ties. I wonder why the King wanted to come to Samoa? why not Tahiti, Tonga, Aotearoa, Nuku Hiva....etc? I finally found out about the King's linage to Samoa through Paao and Pili.

Powerful history. I only wish the King would have succeeded with his plan as old Hawaii was slowly eroding and the Kingdom finally hijacked by them greedy son's of missionaries (sob's). They tried to do the same thing to Samoa. 'Samoa mo Samoa'....chant the Mau.

I urge my Hawaiian cousins to continue in their struggle of keeping their language and customs alive for generations to come.

Aloha and Soifua
