I believe every technique should have at least two applications, one offensive and one defensive. Both of these should be explored.
Example: straight punch
Offensively it is use to attack and strike your opponent
Defensively it is used when your opponent is the aggressor and you throw a punch when you see he is about to throw one at you. This is defense because he initiated it and you kept him from striking out when his to intent was to do so.
Upwards forearm:
Defensively it is used as an up block.
Offensively it is use as a ridge arm to the throat or nose.
